Philip Stein, also known to many as Estaño, died at his home in Manhattan, New York, on April 27, 2009 at the age of 90. A tribute to his life and works will soon appear on this site. Friends, associates, and admirers are encouraged to send their condolences and comments to this e-mail address.

On May 18, 2009, The New York Times published an obituary for Stein that largely recounts the artist's association with the legendary New York jazz scene. Starting in the late 1950s, Stein painted a full sized wall mural at the Village Vanguard, the famous jazz club in Greenwich Village.
